Three Steps to Live the Life You Desire (Plus Goal-Setting Chart) - Dr. Ethel Speaks

Are you living your dream? Many people are not.  But your dream can come true! Whether you dream of more happiness, more income, or more freedom to go where you want to whenever you want to, you can do so –especially in a country of great wealth.

Philanthropy is the dream of a person I know.  She talks often about giving money to students who cannot afford their next step—college or trade school—and to young entrepreneurs who need a hand-up, but she does not have the income to make those dreams come true.  Joni (not her real name) can become the philanthropist she wants to be but she must start doing something about her dream.  You, too, can become the person you want to be and live the life of your dreams.  To get started making your dream come true and Live the Life You Desire, begin by following these three steps:

Step 1. Clearly Identify Your Goal.

There are two places in life that must be crystal clear before you can move forward.  The first is where you are now and where you are going.  If you are not clear about your place in life right now, it is unlikely that you will be able to determine “where to go.”  Even when taking a trip, you must plan your travel from your current location to your coveted destination.

Think about it. Where are you now?  Broke? Not broke, but do not have enough? Are your thoughts and beliefs holding you back?  Are you healthy: physically and mentally fit?  These and many other factors may be contributing to where you are right now.  But wait!  There is encouraging and inspiring news—you can make plans to leave that place.

Clarify what you want.  Write down, specifically, what you want to do, be, or have.  Create a plan outlining the actions you will take to drive into your fabulous future. Remember the phrase “Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail.” Be clear about what you want and about what action you will take to accomplish your desires.

Step 2.  Count the Cost.

Not much in this world is given to you for free.  Some investment is required.  Whether it is your time, your money, or your skill, you must calculate the amount of each of these items you are willing to contribute to your success.  Do you need a person or company to guide you? Must you learn something new that may require a course to be taken? Is a bank loan needed?  These costs are real and often unavoidable. So, consider how much you are willing to invest in yourself.

Who is willing and able to help you diminish these costs?  When I started on my quest for more, several people helped me at no cost to me.  I was fortunate to have family and friends who invested in me.  As my business grows, their income grows because I am able to contribute to them.  The one important element of counting the cost is planning to give back.  However long it takes for you to realize your dream, never forget to give back to those who helped you to arrive at your destination.

Step 3. Choose to Let Go and Replace.

This step is one of the most challenging ones that should be attempted with informed help.  It requires eliminating the thinking, behaviors and, sometimes, people who stand in the way of your progress. It requires replacing these thoughts, behaviors, and people with This is a choice that calls for deep work and most often with the help of a professional.  It is NOT a good idea to make this choice on your own because you may make the wrong choice. That would not be good. You agree?

Has there ever been a time when you thought yourself out of doing something you really wanted to do?  How did that work for you?  “I knew I should have invested in Zoom when I first heard about it!”  “I should have listened to my friends who said ‘Joni, you stay here in this city and not move to another city right now’.”   “I should have changed my circle of friends but, to my regret, I stayed.”  What will it take for you to let go of the things that are holding you back?  This important step is an essential one to consider so that you can, with complete joy, Live the Life You Desire…and Deserve!  So, as the sign says, “Don’t Just Dream, DO!”
